Drug-Induced Nutritional Deficiencies caused by
Common Drugs taken by our Patients

Taught by: Daniel L Richardson, MSc, PhD, DAANC

Pharmaceutical medications are administered to a wide variety of patients for several conditions.  These medications are capable of saving an individual’s life; however, some medications can have detrimental side effects.  A large portion of the side effects created by pharmaceutical medications can be explained by nutrient deficiencies produced by these drugs. Although the administration of these drugs is aimed at increasing a patient’s quality of life, they can act as anti-vitamins and deprive the body of vitamins and minerals vital for the maintenance of optimal health.  A medication such as oral contraceptives is responsible for exhausting the available nutrients in the body.  Depletion is due to the disruption of digestion and absorption of the nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract and by inhibiting the synthesis of nutrients in various body tissues.  Therefore, the administration of nutritional supplementation becomes essential for maintaining quality of life while taking medications.  This seminar will address the effect of common drugs taken by our patients on the body and the vitamin/mineral/metal depletion caused by these drugs.
